China’s Intelligence sharing key to drug lab seizures in Northern Shan state: Myanmar

YANGON: Major General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for the National Defence and Security Council (NDSC), said that the seizure of drug manufacturing sites in Hsipaw and Mongyai townships in Northern Shan State was carried out with full intelligence sharing from China.

He made the remarks on Wednesday (Jan 14) while returning from the Anisakan airport near Pyin Oo Lwin, after officials escorted military attaches and diplomats from foreign embassies, along with local and international media, to view the forest-based drug production sites and seized chemical materials in Hsipaw and Mongyai townships of northern Shan State.

“Today, I would like to briefly summarise the drug seizures. In reality, these drug seizures involved full cooperation and intelligence sharing from China,” Major General Zaw Min Tun said.

During on-site inspections of the seized jungle drug manufacturing locations and chemical substances by representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), international military attachés, diplomats, and domestic and foreign media, Chinese-language writings and goods labelled in Chinese were also found at the sites.

Based on estimates of the chemical substances seized in Hsipaw and Mongyai townships on Jan 9, 10 and 11, 2026, authorities said that approximately 810 million methamphetamine tablets with an estimated value of around 1.62 trillion kyats could have been produced.

The seized drug-manufacturing-related materials are described as the largest such seizure in Myanmar’s history.

In addition, the Anti-Narcotics Police Force assessed that one-third of all ice (crystal methamphetamine) seizures in Myanmar in 2025 originated from production at the locations uncovered in this operation. - Eleven Media/ANN
