HONG KONG: Temperatures over many places in Hong Kong fell to 12 degrees Celsius or below on Friday (Jan 2) morning – four to five degrees lower than those of Thursday (Jan 1) – with the winter monsoon bringing cold and dry weather to the coast of Guangdong.

The minimum temperature recorded at the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) was 12.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest so far this winter.

The lowest temperature recorded at 9:20 am at Ngong Ping was 8 degrees Celsius. Tate's Cairn, Tsuen Wan Ho Kun, and Lau Fau Shan logged 8.7, 11.1, and 12.3 degrees Celsius, respectively. On Hong Kong Island, The Peak recorded 10.3 degrees Celsius at the time.

According to the observatory, the maximum temperature will be around 18 degrees during the day on Friday.

There will be moderate to fresh northerly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground.

It will also remain cold on Saturday morning, and the temperature difference between day and night will be relatively large, said the HKO.

Early next week, temperatures will rise slightly in the region with the monsoon moderating slightly, but it will still be cool in the morning.

“Dry replenishments of the monsoon are expected to influence Guangdong persistently midweek next week. Temperatures over the region will fall again,” the observatory said in a weather update on Friday morning. - China Daily/ANN
