BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Kampong Sungai Besar Mosque organised a thanksgiving prayer ceremony on Wednesday (Dec 31) evening to mark the 42nd anniversary of its official opening.
Held at the mosque, the ceremony was attended by guest of honour Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Datuk Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Badaruddin Pengarah Datuk Paduka Haji Awang Othman, who is also the patron of the mosque takmir committee.
The minister was accompanied by his spouse Datin Nahriah Asbi.
Acting Director of Mosque Affairs at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Amir Hisyam Masri, Penghulu Mukim of Kota Batu Awang Rasli Taram, and Village Head of Kampong Sungai Besar, Kampong Serdang, and Kampong Sungai Belukut Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Awang Zaini Awang Damit were also in attendance.
The ceremony began with a mass Maghrib prayer followed by the Sunnat Hajat prayer led by Pengiran Hassan Basri Pengiran Ismail.
The minister then led the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by the recitation of Surah Yaasiin, Tahlil and the Thanksgiving Prayer, which were led by Imam Pengiran Hassan Basri.
As a token of appreciation and in recognition of dedicated service, the minister presented a commemorative souvenir to former Kampong Sungai Besar Mosque Chief Imam Hanafiah Mahmud, who retired in October 2025, in appreciation of his contributions throughout his tenure.
Kampong Sungai Besar Mosque began operations in 1983 and continues to serve as a centre for worship, Islamic propagation (da’wah), and community activities for the residents of Kampong Sungai Besar and surrounding areas.
Over its 42 years of establishment, the mosque has continued to be enlivened by congregants, alongside the active roles of the takmir committee, Muslimah unit, and Youth and Young Women’s Groups, which organise various religious activities such as Islamic lectures, Al-Quran study classes, and community programmes involving all levels of society.
The mosque was completed on Oct 1, 1982 and has achieved numerous successes in uniting congregants through various religious and community activities.
Kampong Sungai Besar Mosque was officially opened by the then Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Datuk Seri Setia Awang Abdul Aziz Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Datuk Seri Paduka Awang Umar on Jan 1, 1984. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
