Myanmar's Bagan–Nyaung U Airport undergoes upgrades following earthquake damage


YANGON: Upgrading works are currently underway at the Bagan–Nyaung-U Airport in Nyaung-U Township, Mandalay Region, which sustained damage due to a powerful earthquake, according to reports.

On Sunday (Dec 21), Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Mya Tun Oo, together with officials, visited the Bagan–Nyaung-U Airport in Nyaung-U Township, Mandalay Region.

During the visit, the director general of the Department of Civil Aviation and responsible officials briefed the Union Minister on the step-by-step progress of the airport upgrading works.

The Union Minister then inspected the ongoing works, including the expansion of both sides of the runway by 25 feet, asphalt paving of the expanded runway and the existing runway, and the construction of additional aircraft parking areas.

He instructed officials to ensure that the upgrading works are carried out in line with the planned schedule, with due attention to safety and quality standards.

Subsequently, at Mandalay International Airport, the Union Minister inspected the repair and renovation works of passenger lounges damaged by the earthquake, the restoration of traditional Myanmar artworks, and efforts to improve water flow in the airport’s drainage system.

He urged continuous efforts to provide better services for passengers and provided food supplies to airport staff, it was reported. - Eleven Media/ANN
