Malaysian accused of being a scam boss has been arrested after fleeing Cambodia province Poipet

PHNOM PENH: A Malaysian scam boss was arrested in Sa Kaeo province on Sunday after he fled Cambodia's Poipet township to escape the border conflict, as reported by the local media.

The suspect, identified as Ang Joo Heng, 29, had been tracked since police arrested a couple, identified only as Indonesian Kevin and Thai Jiranan, for installing four SIM boxes in a condominium in Bangkok, Pol Maj Gen Chanannat Sarathawanphaet, commander of the Technology Crime Suppression Division, said on Monday (Dec 22), as reported by Bangkok Post.

The couple was arrested at a luxury pool villa in the Cha-am district of Phetchaburi. They said Ang was their employer and he resided in Poipet.

Police learned the Malaysian had sneaked into Sa Kaeo using a natural crossing, driven to flee by the fighting along the border.

He was arrested near the frontier in tambon Khlong Nam Sai of Aranyaprathet district. He allegedly admitted he had ordered the couple to install SIM boxes at various locations in Thailand.

Each device housed many local SIM cards, tricking telecom networks into routing international calls, and was used by call centre scammers, Pol Maj Gen Chanannat said.

The case has been handed over to investigators for further proceedings.
