Myanmar sends 9.2 tonnes of medical and relief aid to flood-hit Sri Lanka

YANGON: Myanmar has donated 9.2 tonnes of medicines, medical supplies and personal care items to Sri Lanka following severe floods caused by Cyclone Ditwah on Nov 28, 2025. The cyclone triggered flooding and landslides in 25 districts, affecting over 900,000 people and damaging homes, roads and essential infrastructure.

Responding to Sri Lanka’s international appeal for emergency assistance, the Myanmar government and public provided humanitarian aid under the guidance of the national leadership.

A Myanmar delegation led by U Zaw Phyo Win, Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Daw Lae Lae Aye, Director-General of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement arrived in Colombo on Sunday (Dec 7) night to deliver the relief items by military aircraft.

At the airport, the delegation was welcomed by Myanmar Ambassador Daw Marlar Than Htike, senior Sri Lankan foreign ministry officials, and representatives from the Sri Lankan Air Force and disaster management authorities.

During the meeting, the Myanmar team expressed condolences for the loss of lives and property and reaffirmed the strong, family-like friendship between the two countries. They said Myanmar would continue assisting Sri Lanka, including donations of rice and additional funds.

The aid handed over included 6.938 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies (26 types) and 2.262 tonnes of personal care items, totalling 9.2 tonnes.

Myanmar’s total contribution is valued at about US$120,000, and the country will also send 500 tonnes of rice and $100,000 in further assistance. - Eleven Media/ANN
