Third Urban Mekong Corridor Initiative Dialogue in Laos aims to promote sustainability


VIENTIANE: The third Urban Mekong Corridor Initiative Dialogue opened in Lao capital Vientiane on Wednesday (Dec 3) to explore solutions to reduce disaster risks and promote sustainable urban development.

The meeting brought together city leaders, provincial governors, and international partners to discuss strategies for building resilient, green, and inclusive cities in the region, the Vientiane Mai newspaper reported on Wednesday.

In his remarks, Phouvong Vongkhamsao, deputy governor of Vientiane, highlighted the conference as a platform to advance sustainable urban development and explore future solutions.

Key priorities include natural disaster risk reduction, better waste and water management, green city initiatives, urban planning, and expanding employment opportunities for women, youth, and disadvantaged communities.

The meeting also aimed to develop practical mechanisms, tools, and models for cities and provinces along the Mekong River to address current and future challenges, fostering resilient, environmentally friendly cities, improved livelihoods, and sustainable development across the region. - Xinhua
