VIENTIANE: In a significant step towards strengthening Laos’ livestock industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in cooperation with leading Chinese companies, has launched a project aimed at controlling and preventing the spread of livestock diseases.
The venture marks a new chapter in regional cooperation to improve animal health, enhance food security, and support Laos’ transition to modern and sustainable livestock production.
The project aligns with the goals of the Department of Livestock and Fissheries’ Development Plan for 2026-2030. It supports the government’s commitment to building a resilient agricultural production base to ensure a stable, nationwide supply of meat, eggs, and fish.
The five-year development plan prioritises improvemnt of the quality, safety, and productivity of the livestock sector, officials said.
The long-term vision focuses on clean, safe, and sustainable production methods that elevate the livestock sector into a modern industry and contribute to the country’s social and economic development.
The main objectives of the project include establishing a strong vaccination and disease-prevention system to ensure healthy cattle and buffalo populations.
The initiative also supports the construction of modern slaughterhouses and meat-processing facilities that meet domestic and export standards, further boosting Laos’ competitiveness in regional markets.
In addition, the project will establish animal disease-prevention and vaccination centres in the north and south of the country.
These centres aim to enhance the capacity of government agencies and local veterinarians, ensuring that animal health services are more efficient.
By promoting disease control, strengthening production standards, and expanding opportunities for export, the initiative is set to play a strong role in supporting Laos’ broader socio-economic development goals. - Vientiane Times/ANN
