HANOI (Xinhua): Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered all-out efforts to accelerate production and economic activity to make up for severe economic losses caused by recent heavy rains and floods, the Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Under a recent official dispatch, the prime minister requested regions unaffected by floods to scale up production beyond the planned levels to offset severe damage in central localities, according to the report.

Total economic losses from severe flooding in the central region are estimated at over 14.3 trillion Vietnamese dong (US$570 million), according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority.

The prime minister underscored the need to recover the livelihoods of flood-affected residents and bolster economic growth, reaffirming the government's target of at least 8 percent GDP expansion this year. - Xinhua
