Tropical Storm Koto influences Brunei weather conditions

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Brunei Darussalam will continue to experience unsettled weather over the next several days as Tropical Storm Koto, currently over the Philippine Sea, brings increased rainfall and gusty winds across the country.

The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) said the nation remains in the Northeast Monsoon season, which typically lasts until March 2026. As of 5.45am on (Nov 26), the storm was located near 12.0°N and 119.0°E — about 950km from Brunei — and is forecast to move westward, away from the Sultanate.

Despite the distance, the system is expected to enhance active weather over land and sea, with more frequent showers and thundershowers anticipated. Conditions may at times include strong, gusty winds. The BDMD said the active weather is expected to persist until Sunday (Nov 30).

Sea conditions are forecast to range from moderate to rough, with wave heights between 1.0 and 3.5 metres.

The department advised the public, motorists and fishermen to exercise caution, noting the heightened risk of flash floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas, especially during continuous heavy rain and high tide. Landslides, fallen trees and roof damage are also possible during heavy showers and strong winds.

The BDMD also warned that the rough sea conditions pose hazards to small boats, recreational activities and marine sports.

The department said it will continue to monitor developments and issue advisories or warnings when necessary. Members of the public can obtain the latest information through the Brunei WX mobile app, Weather Line 114, the BDMD website, or its Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and WhatsApp channels.

The public is also reminded to verify information before sharing, especially weather-related updates circulating on social media. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
