BAGUIO CITY: Swedish Ambassador to the Philippines Anna Ferry said Sweden is introducing mining technologies used in their own operations to help improve safety and efficiency in the Philippine mining industry.

“In Sweden, we have 13 mining companies and a strict zero-tolerance policy for accidents,” Ferry said during a press conference on Tuesday (Nov 18).

“Companies work closely with equipment providers and researchers to continually develop science-based, safer technologies. Everyone develops these products to make sure that the mines are as safe as possible. We have zero tolerance and zero vision of no injuries.”

Ferry, together with Business Sweden, is participating in the five-day 71st Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) annual conference, where they are promoting Sweden-developed systems and equipment designed to support safer mining operations.

She said Sweden’s mining sector —one of the most established in the European Union— has long worked in partnership with industry, academia, government, and local communities to improve worker safety and environmental protection.

As part of this effort, Sweden has partnered with Apex Mining for a pilot project introducing Swedish mining technologies to the Philippines.

Apex Mining President and Chief Executive Officer Louie Sarmiento, who also serves as PMSEA president, said the company sought Sweden’s expertise to help modernize and strengthen industry safety standards.

“Apex took the lead to work with Business Sweden and tap the expertise of Swedish companies to introduce smart technologies geared towards safe operations,” he said, noting that all mining firms maintain safety targets monitored by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

He added that workers are rewarded for achieving safe man-hours, underscoring the industry’s emphasis on safety.

Apex Mining’s Haiza Pigkaulan said the collaboration will initially focus on establishing underground internet connectivity, which will pave the way for digital solutions to enhance productivity and safety, particularly in environments where visibility and communication are limited.

“It’s a very big help to embrace this technology. This is just the beginning, opening the doors, making the technology closer to us so we can choose a digital solution that boils down to safety, productivity, and operation enhancement.”

Real-time information is also expected to reduce equipment downtime and boost productivity.

She added that companies view safety as a key investment area, with costs varying depending on how each firm prioritizes safety and operational efficiency.
