Mayors’ group backs Marcos amid calls for resignation

MANILA: The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), comprising 149 mayors nationwide, expressed once again its support Wednesday (Nov 19) for the leadership of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (pic) amid calls for the president to resign.

“The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) reiterates its full support for the leadership of His Excellency Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., being the duly constitutionally elected President of the Republic of the Philippines,” the statement read.

“We stand behind his commitment to further empower local government units in advancing public infrastructure, education, and health services, while upholding transparency and accountability in public governance,” the group added.

The group also said that they will continue to align efforts with Marcos’ initiatives.

In the past few days, protesters demanding transparency and accountability have been calling for the president to step down from his position amid ongoing investigations into the alleged irregularities in flood-control projects.

Most recently, those from the United People’s Initiative called for Marcos’ resignation following former Ako-Bicol party-list Representative Elizaldy Co’s exposé, linking the president to insertions in the General Appropriations Bill.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Tuesday expressed disappointment over Sen. Imee Marcos’ accusations of drug use against her brother.

Calls for Marcos’ resignation amplified even further after the president’s sister, Senator. Imee Marcos, claimed that the president has been using illegal drugs.

Malacañang responded to these calls, saying a resignation is “not an option,” also saying that Marcos Jr. “is still working and continues to work for the country." - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
