NEW DELHI (Xinhua): The death toll in Tuesday's train accident in India's central state of Chhattisgarh has risen to 11, an official of the Indian Railways confirmed on Wednesday.
Among the dead was the locomotive driver of the ill-fated passenger train. Nearly 17 people are undergoing treatment at two local hospitals, with some in critical condition.
The mishap occurred when a passenger train rammed into a stationary goods train in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district.
"The passenger train hit the goods train from behind at a speed of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour (km/h) after overshooting a red signal," the official was quoted as saying.
The impact of the collision was so severe that several passenger coaches mounted the goods train. An investigation is underway to determine why the passenger train ran a red signal. - Xinhua
