Laos intensifies drive to improve public health


VIENTIANE (Xinhua): Laos is intensifying efforts to strengthen public health nationwide, integrating infrastructure development, capacity building, and international cooperation.

To ensure sufficient healthcare services and strengthen the overall health system, Laos continues to build and upgrade hospitals and health centers across the country.

A foundation stone laying ceremony for the construction of the University of Health Sciences Hospital was held in Lao capital Vientiane on Oct. 27. The new 400-bed facility will include outpatient departments, laboratories, radiology, emergency, surgical, and obstetrics units, serving both patient care and medical training purposes.

Construction is scheduled for completion by April 2028.

The Lao Ministry of Health is expanding access to rehabilitation services and strengthening healthcare capacity nationwide. Launched in August, the initiative focuses on the rehabilitation medicine center in northern Laos' Oudomxay province, providing free, high-quality care for people with disabilities, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups in northern provinces.

It also aims to upgrade infrastructure, equip facilities with modern medical and training equipment, and enhance the skills of rehabilitation personnel.

Laos is also enhancing public health through international cooperation, with medical aid teams providing treatment and training for local staff.
