VIENTIANE: Laos’ world heritage site of Luang Prabang has once again been recognised as one of Asia’s most popular holiday destinations, according to the Smart Travel Asia Best in Travel Poll 2025, reaffirming its reputation as a world-class tourism city that continues to charm travellers with its cultural authenticity and natural beauty.

The annual online poll, conducted from June to August by Smart Travel Asia, listed Luang Prabang among the top 10 Asian holiday destinations, alongside Bangkok, Tokyo, Bali, Chiang Mai, Seoul, Hong Kong, Phuket, Rajasthan, Taipei, Kyoto, and Danang/Hoi An.

The recognition comes as tourism in Laos continues to boom, with a 15 per cent increase in foreign visitors recorded during the first eight months of this year.

According to the Tourism Marketing Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Laos welcomed 3,061,928 foreign tourists from January to August this year, with the largest numbers coming from Thailand, Vietnam, and China.

The provinces attracting the highest number of visitors were Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Champasak, as well as the capital Vientiane.

The accolade highlights the enduring appeal of Luang Prabang, a Unesco World Heritage town famed for its well-preserved architecture, tranquil riverside atmosphere, centuries-old temples, and harmonious blend of traditional Lao and colonial heritage.

The city’s growing reputation for sustainable and community-based tourism has also drawn international recognition.

In recent years, Luang Prabang has received multiple international awards, including recognition as one of the World’s Best Cities by Travel + Leisure, and was named among the Top Emerging Sustainable Destinations in Asia by the Green Destinations Story Awards. - Vientiane Times/ANN
