VIENTIANE: The under-construction Truong Son Wind Power Project in Bolikhamxay province will not only generate electricity but is already helping to improve the lives of local people, according to a report in the Pathetlao Daily newspaper.
The wind farm, located in Khamkeuth and Xaychamphon districts, is owned by the Viet Lao Power Joint Stock Company. It has a total generating capacity of 250MW, with the Truong Son Wind Power Project 2 producing an additional 350MW.
With construction beginning last year and completion and electricity generation expected by the end of 2025, the project is already bringing social and economic improvement to nearby communities.
Director of the Truong Son Wind Power Project, Huong Chung Anh, said the project has been carrying out a series of community development programmes since its inception.
The company has supported local people through initiatives in agriculture, education, human resource development and infrastructure improvement.
In particular, it has assisted villagers in cultivating rice, sweetcorn and cassava as commercial crops by providing seeds, organic fertiliser and technical guidance.
The project also guarantees to purchase the produce at fair prices, ensuring a stable income for farmers.
In addition, the company has constructed an irrigation system to provide a reliable water supply, allowing farmers to grow crops twice a year.
During the first phase, pilot programmes for rice and cassava cultivation were implemented with 13 households from Na Pae, Thong Pae and Na Hard villages.
Upon completion of this stage, the project will move into the second phase in early 2026, focusing on completing irrigation works and buying seeds and agricultural produce, and expanding support to additional households for crop planting.
Looking ahead to the third phase, the company will partner with Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Hanoi National University to research and develop medicinal plant cultivation.
This initiative aims to create sustainable employment opportunities, strengthen the local economy, and promote long-term environmental sustainability.
The company emphasised its commitment to protecting farmers’ interests, promising to compensate households in case of unforeseen losses or crop failures during the first phase of implementation.
