'Careful what you read' - Brunei public cautioned against false reports published online


BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Brunei Ministry of Finance and Economy has said an article on the website www.capital-brain-ai.pro titled ‘Brunei Darussalam government launches government bond platform’ dated October 6 is false.

The ministry advised the public to exercise caution and not to trust such articles without verifying the authenticity of the information.

The act of cheating by impersonation is punishable under Section 419 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22, and carries a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years and a fine, upon conviction.

In addition, disseminating false information that can likely cause public alarm is a criminal offence under Section 34 of the Public Order Act, Chapter 148, that carries a BND3,000 fine or three years’ imprisonment or both.

To report suspicious financial activities, contact Brunei Darussalam Central Bank’s (BDCB) Financial Consumer Issues at 8380007/fci@bdcb.gov.bn, and the Anti-Scam Helpline at 16993.

A person who has fallen victim to a scam should immediately report to the respective bank or financial institution, as well as the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) at the nearest police station or contact the emergency hotline at 993.
