Sri Lanka allocates US$7mil to modernise postal service


COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan government has allocated 2.08 billion rupees (about US$7 million) to modernise the country's postal service, a minister said Monday.

Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, speaking at a ceremony in Colombo where 731 individuals were recruited to the postal service, said the funds would be used to upgrade facilities and introduce new technologies.

Of the total allocation, about 200 million rupees (about US$670,000) would be spent on purchasing new trucks, vans, laptops and desktop computers, he said, adding that another 600 million rupees (about US$2 million) would go toward new construction projects.

Jayatissa added that the government plans to recruit an additional 3,000 individuals to the department soon. - Xinhua
