Massive rains wreak havoc in North Bengal; 13 killed as bridge collapses in Darjeeling

NEW DELHI: Massive overnight rains wreaked havoc in North Bengal on Sunday (Oct 5), causing widespread destruction in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. At least 13 people have been killed in rain-related accidents.

The iron bridge over the Balason River at Dudhia, which connected Siliguri and Mirik, collapsed and several roads were damaged, affecting connectivity.

National Highway-717E connecting Bengal to Sikkim has also been blocked due to a landslide between Pedong and Rishikhola.

According to reports, NH-10 is also blocked after a portion was washed away due to heavy rains. Another key road from Kalimpong to Darjeeling via Teesta Bazar is also closed due to flooding.

While nine people were killed when the iron bridge collapsed, four died in the Sukhia area due to landslides.

Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has expressed deep anguish over the devastation caused by the heavy rainfall.

“I am extremely anguished to learn about the massive damages caused due to extremely heavy rainfall in many parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. There have been deaths, loss of properties, and damages to infrastructure. I am taking stock of the situation and in touch with the relevant authorities,” Bista said.

“We have already instructed our BJP karyakartas to help and assist people. We will do everything in our power to support those in need,” he stated.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, also expressed concern over the destruction, urging the state’s Chief Secretary to take immediate action.

Adhikari said that thousands of residents are stranded and facing hardships without access to essential supplies and services.

“I urge the Chief Secretary of West Bengal to immediately mobilise resources and make adequate arrangements for the swift restoration of communication networks in these areas. Additionally, priority must be given to distributing relief materials, including food, water, medicines, and temporary shelters, to aid the people in distress,” he said. - The Statesman/ANN
