BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Seri Mulia Sarjana School was crowned champion in the IET Faraday® Challenge Days ‘Coding the Future’ competition at Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) Multi-purpose Hall recently.

They developed a cost-effective climate-responsive fan system designed to address Brunei’s hot and humid conditions.

Meanwhile, Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan won first runner-up, engineering an impact sensor for sports applications to enhance athlete safety and performance monitoring.

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic School was the second runner-up, who created an anti-gaming device to promote healthy screen time habits. The Team Spirit Award went to Jerudong International School for designing an anti-burglary alarm system for home security.

Organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Darussalam Network, the challenge required student teams to develop two products using BBC micro:bit technology within one of four themes: health, sport, travel, or home and leisure.

Teams worked as Faraday Code Crew Software Engineers, taking on various roles including project management, marketing, and budgeting while managing their resources within a simulated “Faradays” currency system.

The winning teams demonstrated engineering skills, creativity and innovation in addressing everyday challenges through technology, showcasing how coding enables computers to help solve problems that would otherwise be much more difficult.

The event aimed to inspire young minds to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by providing hands-on experience in product development, coding and teamwork.

Organised by the IET Young Professionals Section in collaboration with On Campus Groups from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD OCs), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB OCs), and Politeknik Brunei (PB OCs), the Faraday Challenge Day forms part of IET Brunei’s ongoing commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers and technology innovators. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
