Metro Sarong proudly showcases Malaysian heritage in France

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The second edition of Metro Sarong 2025 was held in Lyon, France last Saturday, in celebration of Malaysia’s rich culture and heritage.

Organiser, Malaysian Embassy in France, in a statement said more than 70 participants comprising the Malaysian diaspora and friends of Malaysia participated in the event organised in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia Paris and the Malaysian Association in Lyon (MALYON).

The participants had gathered at Place des Terreaux in front of Lyon’s iconic Hôtel de Ville dressed in sarongs of various colours and motifs, including batik and pelikat.

They then made their way by metro to Place Maréchal Lyautey to join the Fête des Bannières du Monde (Festival of Flags from Around the World) and took part in a parade alongside participants from 40 other countries.

Organised by the city of Lyon, the festival celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of cultures from around the world through music and dance, food, traditional costume, games, and a grand parade.

Malaysia’s Ambassador to France Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim said the event served as an occasion to bring together the Malaysian family in France to celebrate a shared culture.

Besides it was also an opportunity to showcase the country’s rich heritage to the world.

Inspired by Malaysia’s ‘Keretapi Sarong’ initiative, Metro Sarong is part of the embassy’s cultural diplomacy programme to showcase Malaysia’s rich culture and traditions in France.

This year’s event also coincided with the European Heritage Day celebration in France on Sept 20 and 21. - Bernama
