Japan's runaway hit "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle" tops North American box office on opening weekend


LOS ANGELES (Xinhua): Japan hot anime movie, "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle," dominated the North American box office on its opening weekend, earning an estimated US$70 million, according to data released Sunday by measurement firm Comscore.

The film, distributed by Sony-owned Crunchyroll, set a record for the biggest opening weekend in North America for an anime film.

"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle" held a 97 percent approval rating based on 38 reviews on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

It also received an "A" grade from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore, which uses a standard scale from A+ to F.

Warner Bros. and New Line's horror film "The Conjuring: Last Rites" dropped to second place on its second weekend with 26 million dollars.

Rounding out the top three, Focus Features' historical drama film "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale" opened in third place with 18.1 million dollars. - XInhua
