Quarantine extended in Mongolia's bubonic plague epicentre


Bubonic plague is caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium, which is carried by small animals like rodents.

ULAANBAATAR: Authorities have ordered the continuation of quarantine measures in the epicentre of the bubonic plague outbreak in northern Khuvsgul province, after the the death of a 24-year-old man from the plague there was confirmed on Sept 8..

The State Emergency Commission and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Operational Headquarters are closely monitoring developments, issuing instructions, and providing professional and methodological guidance.

On September 8, Colonel A. Dashnyam, Head of NEMA’s Operational Management Department, held an online meeting with the province’s Emergency Commission. The following day, September 9, Colonel T. Bayarkhuu, Secretary of the State Emergency Commission, also convened a virtual session with the commission.

Specialist teams from NEMA and related organisations remain on the ground, enforcing the quarantine and ensuring compliance with restrictions.

The meetings emphasised the need to continue curfew measures, strictly monitor the movement of citizens in and out of the affected areas, strengthen coordination and communication between agencies, exchange information in a timely manner, and carry out disinfection and preventive activities without delay. - Go Go Mongolia
