SEAMEO SPAFA inspects earthquake-damaged heritage sites in Myanmar

YANGON: The South-East Asian Ministers of Education Organisation Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SEAMEO SPAFA) has conducted field inspections of ancient structures damaged by a powerful earthquake.

From 14 to 21 July, the team visited earthquake-affected heritage cities, including Amarapura, Inwa, and Mandalay. The inspection covered notable sites such as the Shwe Gu Gyi Pagoda in Amarapura, the Bagaya Monastery, Mae Nu Brick Monastery, Kyauk Taw Gyi Pagoda, and Kuthodaw Pagoda in Inwa, as well as the Mandalay Palace. The mission was carried out in collaboration with local experts to assess the extent of the damage.

SEAMEO SPAFA stated that this initiative is an important step in its heritage programme for natural disaster risk management, aiming to support long-term conservation and restoration plans for Myanmar’s cultural heritage. The effort also highlights the importance of collaborative actions in heritage preservation.

A follow-up inspection is scheduled for late August, according to the organisation’s statement. - Eleven Media/ANN
