MANILA: Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted 2,626 tonnes of sulfur dioxide over the past 24 hours, a significant increase from the 870 tones recorded the previous day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Thursday (JUne 26).

According to Phivolcs’ latest 24-hour monitoring report, the volcano produced a moderate plume that reached 500m high, drifting northwest.

The volcano also recorded four volcanic earthquakes, fewer than the 12 logged on Wednesday.

Phivolcs said Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Kanlaon, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest.

The agency also said Kanlaon’s edifice is still inflated, and continued degassing is observed.

Phivolcs warned the public of potential volcanic hazards, including:

>Sudden explosive eruptions

>Lava flows or effusions

>Ashfall

>Pyroclastic density currents

>Rockfalls

>Lahars during heavy rainfall

Residents within a six-kilometre radius of Kanlaon’s summit are advised to evacuate. Flying any aircraft near the volcano is also prohibited.

The office of Civil Defence likewise recently reimposed a suspension on the entry of evacuees into Kanlaon’s six-kilometre extended danger zone for farming and livelihood activities, effective June 24, due to increasing signs of a potential eruption. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
