PHNOM PENH: More than 200,000 containers passed through Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) in the first five months of 2025, an increase of nearly 30% compared to the same period in 2024.
The total cargo and fuel volume handled exceeded 2 million tonnes, up by a fifth.
According to a press release from the publically listed PPAP, from January to May 2025, the port received a total of 1,478 cargo vessels — a 1.44% increase year-on-year. It handled 206,055 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), a 28.75% rise, and 2,174,864 tonnes of cargo and fuel, marking a 21.33% increase.
Passenger vessel traffic grew slightly, with 184 recorded — up 3.95% — and a total of 19,695 passengers, a 9.81% increase from the same period in 2024.
Chea Chandara, president of the Association of Freight Forwarders and Supply Chains in Cambodia, told The Post on Thursday (June 12) that new investment inflows and increasing agricultural output have continuously driven up logistics activity in Cambodia.
He noted that the cargo handling and warehouse capacities at PPAP have also been expanded to meet growing demand.
He added that these positive developments would intensify further once the global economic situation — especially in major markets like the US — improves.
“Investor inflows into Cambodia will become a major factor in boosting trade and transportation activities. River freight will become increasingly busy because it is a cost-effective mode of transport and allows for larger shipments compared to other means,” he said.
He also highlighted how the Funan Techo Canal project, which has almost begun construction, will significantly enhance connectivity between Cambodia’s inland water transport and international markets.
“There’s no doubt that traffic at Phnom Penh Autonomous Port will grow even more once the Funan Techo Canal project becomes operational,” he said.
PPAP secretary-general Kong Channy also noted that the port’s operations are expected to experience further growth in the near future. He noted that the port is seeking approval from high-level government authorities to open seven additional port terminals in Kampong Chhnang (2), Kandal (2), Siem Reap (1), Kampong Cham (1) and Kratie (1) provinces.
Currently, PPAP has seven terminal locations: three in Phnom Penh, two in Kandal province, one in Prey Veng and one in Tboung Khmum. They play a crucial role in transporting agricultural products and heavy goods.
In 2024, PPAP generated revenue of more than US$41 million, a 21% increase from 2023, while total container throughput rose to nearly 500,000 TEUs. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
