Thailand reduces opening days for major border crossings with Cambodia; chaos at border gate as workers rush to go across

PHNOM PENH (Phnom Penh Post (ANN)/Khmer Times): Officials at Poipet International Border Gate are reporting large crowds this Sunday morning, as worried Cambodians and foreigners attempt to cross the border in light of new Thai restrictions on movement between Thailand and Cambodia.

Officials stated that on Sunday morning, June 8, 2025, the situation at the Poipet International Border Gate, Banteay Meanchey Province, was very congested after the Thai side adjusted the opening hours of the border gate.

However, border officials from both countries continued to talk and facilitate border crossings between the two countries.

The Thai side has decided to adjust the opening hours of the border gate unilaterally, opening from 8 am to 4 pm for all international gates, while bilateral gates are closed.

Following the closure yesterday of numerous border crossing gates with Cambodia yesterday, the Thai government states that it will further restrict opening days of several major border crossings.

On the 7th of June, Thailand closed the Choam International Border Gate and the O Smach International Border Gate in Oddar Meanchey province and the Poipet International Gate and the Stung Bot International Gate in Banteay Meanchey Province, early.

The moves by Thailand are a response to the border clash incident of the 28th of May, that left a Cambodian soldier dead. - Phnom Penh Post (ANN)/Khmer Times
