SINGAPORE: A man was charged on June 3 with murdering a 79-year-old woman in Sengkang.

Lim Yuen Li, 44, is accused of killing Wang How Khiew, who is believed to be his mother, in a flat at Block 465B Fernvale Road between 2am and 10.30am on June 1.

In a statement on June 2, police said officers received a call for help shortly before noon that day.

The Straits Times understands that Lim and Wang were living together.

A police spokesperson said officers found Wang lying motionless inside the flat.

Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedics pronounced her dead there.

On June 3, Lim was ordered to be remanded for psychiatric assessment at the Changi Prison Complex Medical Centre. His case will be mentioned again in court on June 24.

Before the hearing ended, he asked the court if he could attend the funeral of the “deceased”, without referring to Wang as his mother.

He also asked if he could use his mobile phone to make calls and added that he wanted to apply for a state lawyer.

A police prosecutor replied that the authorities would inform the investigating officer about these requests.

Offenders convicted of murder face the death penalty.

This is the second case in 2025 where a man has been charged with killing a family member.

On March 13, Abdul Rani Md Ariffin, 58, was charged with murdering his younger brother, Abdul Rahman Mohamad Ariffin, 57, at about 4am on March 11 at Block 187 Boon Lay Avenue. - The Straits Times/ANN
