SINGAPORE: A minibus driver was arrested on May 26 following an accident that resulted in the death of an 84-year-old male pedestrian.

When contacted, the police said they were alerted to the accident that took place at the junction of Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1 and Choa Chu Kang Central at around 6.15am.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, said the police. The minibus driver, a 53-year-old man, was arrested for careless driving causing death.

A video circulating online shows the aftermath of the accident, with a blue police tent set up between a minibus and a police car in the rightmost lane of a road.

The video also shows uniformed officers speaking with a civilian at the scene. Several police motorcycles are seen parked along the rightmost lane, adjacent to the road divider.

Investigations are ongoing.

According to the latest annual statistics report released by the Traffic Police, 139 people died in traffic accidents in 2024 – an increase from the 131 deaths in 2023.

Elderly pedestrians are a significant concern despite road safety improvements, with fatalities halving from 23 in 2023 to 11 in 2024 – a 52.2 per cent decrease.

Although they make up only 12.5 per cent of Singapore’s population, the elderly were involved in 42.3 per cent of all fatal pedestrian accidents and accounted for 44 per cent of pedestrian deaths in 2024. - The Straits Times/ANN
