Burglar fries chicken, takes beer in South Korea late-night restaurant break-in

SEOUL: A burglar broke into a fried chicken restaurant in South Korea overnight, fried some chicken, grabbed a beer, and left without taking anything else.

Three days later, the bizarre incident repeated itself. When police caught the culprit, they discovered it was a former staff member, returning for a late-night snack.

This case, which took place in the city of Sejong in August 2024, gained media attention this week, after a court sentenced the culprit to six months in jail, suspended for one year.

The Daejeon District Court on March 19 found the defendant, a man in his 40s, guilty of compound larceny, defined in the Article 330 of the Criminal Act as stealing another person’s property by trespassing at night.

The defendant is accused of stealing two fried chickens and alcohol worth about 84,000 won (S$77) in total. He said he knew how to fry the chicken because he had worked there in the past.

The maximum penalty for the crime is 10 years, but the court said it gave a lighter punishment since the amount stolen was very small and the victim did not want the defendant to be punished. - The Korea Herald/ANN
