JAKARTA: (Bernama) A total of 400 Indonesian nationals have been successfully evacuated from Myawaddy, Myanmar, after falling victim to an online scam syndicate.
The group, comprising 313 men and 87 women, was rescued from the conflict zone on Monday (March 17) and is reported to be in good health, with six of the women pregnant, according to Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.
"They were taken across the border into Thailand via the 2nd Friendship Bridge and arrived in the town of Mae Sot, where they underwent medical screening and National Referral Mechanism processing.
"The group then travelled by road for 10 hours in nine buses to Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok, before boarding a chartered flight back to Indonesia,” the ministry stated in a statement.
According to the ministry, the evacuees are expected to arrive at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Tuesday morning.
An additional 154 Indonesians are set to be rescued in a second operation, with their arrival in Jakarta scheduled for Wednesday, the ministry added.
Officials from Indonesia’s foreign ministry, along with staff from its embassies in Bangkok and Yangon, coordinated the evacuation with assistance from Thai and Myanmar authorities. - Bernama
