SEOUL: Police on Wednesday (March 12) revealed the identity of a teacher accused of stabbing an eight-year-old student to death at an elementary school in Daejeon on Feb. 10.
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency decided to disclose the suspect’s name, age and photos on its website Wednesday, identifying the teacher as 48-year-old Myung Jae-wan. Myung’s information will remain public until April 11.
According to the police agency, the decision was made after a deliberation committee held a day earlier, in consideration of the seriousness of the alleged crime and views of bereaved family members. Police added that Myung did not raise any objections.
On Feb. 10, Myung was found beside the student, Kim Ha-neul, with multiple stab wounds that are believed to have been self-inflicted. Kim was pronounced dead at the hospital due to excessive bleeding. Myung was arrested by authorities last week after receiving medical treatment.
Police suspect that Myung planned the crime, as it was found she had purchased her weapon beforehand at a supermarket nearby the school.
Myung was to be forwarded to the prosecution as early as 10 a.m. on Wednesday. - The Korea Herald/ANN
