Indonesia's rail operator sees passenger surge ahead of Ramadan and Hari Raya travel

JAKARTA (Bernama): More than 246,000 passengers have travelled on long-distance trains across Indonesia in recent days, as demand surges ahead of Ramadan, according to state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).

The company reported 125,008 passengers on Feb 28, 69,719 passengers on March 1, and 51,400 passengers on March 2, with the number expected to rise as ticket sales continue, said KAI’s vice president of public relations, Anne Purba, in a statement.

"Pre-Ramadan homecoming is a common trend, as many people prefer to observe the first day of fasting with their families.

"KAI is committed to providing the best service by ensuring operational readiness, improving facilities, and introducing innovations to enhance travel comfort,” she said.

Anne added that the surge in train travel is expected to continue as people prepare for the annual Eid homecoming, locally known as mudik, one of the world’s largest mass migrations.

KAI reported it has already sold 1,393,836 tickets, or 40.47 per cent of the 3.44 million seats available for the 2025 Eid holiday period.

"These figures reflect the strong demand for train travel during the Eid (Hari Raya) season,” Anne said, noting that long-distance train tickets can be booked up to 45 days in advance.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, sees millions of people leave major cities each year to celebrate Eid with their families, leading to a surge in demand for transportation by train, bus and air travel. - Bernama
