Myanmar authorities arrest bank robber in Mandalay


MANDALAY: A robber who targeted KBZ Bank Branch 37 in Mandalay was arrested on the morning of February 22, according to initial reports.

A man armed with a gun robbed KBZ Bank 37 in Bodhikone, Mahaaungmye Township, on the afternoon of February 21, and took about 150 million kyats (US$0.07 million) on a motorcycle.

Officials searched for the perpetrator and found him with evidence, including money, on 120th Street, 68B Street and 68C Street in Pyigyitagun Township. Initial investigations revealed that the man is a 54-year-old delivery man.

It was also revealed that he had robbed a pharmacy located on 120th Street, between 57th and 58th streets in Pyigyitagun Township at gunpoint at around 4pm on February 18 and took 1.5 million (US$0.7 million) kyats.

On January 11, a robber with a homemade gun attacked the same bank branch, and the robber was arrested after being surrounded by security forces as he was leaving the bank.

Robberies have occurred frequently at KBZ branches, and in most cases, the robbers easily took amounts of 100 million to 300 million kyats (US$0.05 million to US$0.14 million).

In addition, in some of the robberies at KBZ branches in which the robbers were arrested, they were found to People's Defence Force members, according to the information team of the State Administration Council (SAC). - Eleven Media/ANN
