State oil and gas firm PT Pertamina advances Indonesia's clean energy goals with biodiesel for fleet

JAKARTA (Xinhua): Indonesia's state oil and gas firm, PT Pertamina, has supported and implemented the government's clean energy programme by adopting B40 biodiesel fuel for its ships, an official has announced.

Muhammad Irfan Zainul Fikri, fleet director of PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), said that as of January 2025, 189 ships used for national energy distribution by PIS, a subsidiary that was designated as the main shipping sub-holding within PT Pertamina in 2021, have been utilising B40 fuel.

He explained that this strategic step aims to bolster efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support the government's energy transition initiative.

"All 189 ships operated by PIS have been using B40 fuel to support the green energy program and maintain energy security," he said.

The B40 fuel, a hybrid fuel that uses biodiesel from vegetable sources, has shown greater efficiency in reducing carbon emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly solution for the transportation and shipping industries.

The adoption of B40 is in line with the long-term green vision of PIS to achieve net zero emissions in 2050.

"In the future, we hope PIS will lead the way in the green shipping industry, driving the transformation toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly sector," he added. - Xinhua
