Husband of late Barbie ‘Big S’ Hsu vows to protect children from ‘the wicked’

The husband of late Taiwanese actress Barbie “Big S” Hsu Shi-yuan has pledged to take legal action to protect her children “from the wicked” and offer his share from her hard-earned inheritance to his mother-in-law.

In a post on his Instagram page on Thursday night, South Korean rapper Koo Jun-yup, also known as “DJ Koo”, broke his silence to mourn his wife who died at the age of 48. Her family on Monday confirmed the superstar’s sudden death in Japan from a flu-triggered pneumonia.

“I am currently in a state of indescribable sadness and pain, with a heart as if being cut by a knife, and my insides are torn apart. I have no strength to speak, nor do I want to speak,” Koo wrote in both Chinese and Korean.

Koo rekindled his relationship with Hsu, whom he dated previously, in 2022, and they married after the actress ended her decade-long marriage with Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei.

Hsu and Wang, who had a daughter and a son together, had acrimonious exchanges on social media and filed lawsuits following their separation.

In his post Koo said there were individuals tarnishing his family, with some pretending to mourn while walking in the rain.

It was in an apparent reference to Wang, who flew to Taiwan from Thailand after learning of Hsu’s death and was spotted walking in the rain in Taipei on Monday.

Koo said Hsu’s wealth, which some media have estimated to be more than NT$1 billion, was earned for her family through hard work and dedication.

“Therefore, I have decided to hand over my share entirely to my mother-in-law,” he said.

Koo also said he would not allow any “wicked” people to approach Hsu’s children.

“I will take legal measures through lawyers to protect their rights until they reach adulthood,” he wrote.

“I believe that safeguarding the family that Shi-yuan loved most is the last thing I can do for her.”

Born in 1976, Barbie Hsu formed the pop group SOS in the early 1990s with her sister Dee Hsu, also known as “Small S.” The duo released several albums together before transitioning to hosting popular variety shows such as Guess Guess Guess and 100 per cent Entertainment.

Hsu’s career soared with her portrayal of Shancai in the 2001 TV drama Meteor Garden. The series became a hit not only in Taiwan but also in Hong Kong, the Philippines, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand.
