Eight dead, 11 injured in West Java toll plaza crash

JAKARTA: At least eight people were killed and 11 others injured in a multi-vehicle collision at the Ciawi Toll Plaza in West Java late Tuesday (Feb 4), local police said.

The accident occurred at 11.30pm local time when a truck carrying mineral water collided with several vehicles queuing to pay tolls on the Jakarta-bound route.

The collision is suspected to have been caused by brake failure, according to Bogor City Traffic Police Chief Commissioner Yudiono.

"The truck struck six vehicles in front of it that were waiting to enter the toll gate, and three of them caught fire,” he said in a statement.

Footage circulating on social media showed vehicles engulfed in flames shortly after the crash.

All victims were transported to a hospital in Ciawi, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing, he added. - Bernama
