VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Asean countries welcomed more than 123 million foreign tourists last year, an increase of 30.6 per cent compared to 2023.
The increase is attributed to the introduction of travel incentives, such as easier visa rules and the development of new tourism products.
The encouraging figure was reported at the Asean Tourism Forum 2025 which took place in Malaysia from January 15-20, with the theme “Unity in Motion: Shaping Asean’s Tourism Tomorrow”, which was attended by Laos’ Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Darany Phommavongsa and her delegation.
The meeting agreed to promote and strengthen the Asean tourism cooperation framework by contributing and implementing tourism activities in the Asean region and within each member country, and by active participation in the Asean-China Tourism 2025, Asean-India Tourism 2025, and related activities.
The Forum reviewed the implementation of priority activities from 2016-2025 and discussed the Asean tourism strategy for 2026-2030, which focuses on responsible tourism, sustainability, participation and adaptability.
The meeting also emphasised the importance of cooperation between Asean member countries, various related parties and the business sector to achieve sustainable development.
At the same time, the meeting also expressed appreciation to Laos for creating the Asean ecotourism standard during the country’s chairmanship of Asean, which was approved at the Asean Summit in October.
During the Forum, the winners of the annual AseanTourism Standard Awards were announced, with businesses from across Laos receiving 19 awards.
Awards were given for excellence in the Homestay, Community Based Tourism, Spa, and Public Toilet categories.
Of the 30 Asean Homestay Standard awards presented, Laos received four, which went to Naduang village in Vangvieng district, Vientiane province; Donekho village in Sanasomboun district; Done Daeng village in Pathoumphon district; and Nongluang village in Pakxong district, Champassak province.
This category of the Asean tourism awards was introduced in 2016. The scheme aims to encourage and commend guesthouse operators, especially village residents who provide such services, and public and private sectors in Asean member countries who have demonstrated success in this field of work.
The results of assessments carried out are used as a measurement tool and a reference for determining future plans and identifying issues that need to be improved. - Vientiane Times/ANN
