Thailand steps up border security and migration measures with aims of combating illicit activities

BANGKOK (Bernama): Thailand is committed to accelerating the implementation of comprehensive measures to address cross-border migration and combat illicit activities along its borders, particularly at the Thailand-Myanmar border, said Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

He said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has prioritised implementing comprehensive measures to tackle cross-border migration and illicit activities effectively.

The measures include tightening immigration controls, preventing human trafficking, monitoring migrants’ travel routes, and disrupting illegal telecommunications networks in border regions, he said in a statement delivered by Defence Ministry spokesperson Major General Thanathip Sawangsaeng on Monday.

Phumtham reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the root causes of migration and border-related issues in a systematic manner, aiming to create a secure and stable environment for both migrant workers and local residents.

"These efforts will not only reduce the negative impacts but also solidify Thailand’s role as a regional leader in humanitarian assistance and border security," he said.

Highlighting the challenges faced by migrant workers along the Thai-Myanmar border, particularly in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, and Myawaddy, Myanmar, Phumtham said that these areas face complex issues, including humanitarian concerns, security challenges, and economic interests. - Bernama
