Laos eyes pomelo exports to improve rural livelihood

VIENTIANE,: A feasibility study on pomelo cultivation will be conducted in northern Laos' Oudomxay province, aiming to grow and process pomelo in Laos for domestic supply and exports, while improving rural livelihood.

The project is expected to utilise approximately 10,000 hectares of land, with an annual production target of 200,000 tonnes of pomelos, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Besides selling the fruit in the domestic market, it plans to export pomelos to China and Europe.

The project will introduce advanced agricultural techniques to Laos, ranging from producing saplings to providing technical aid for growing the fruit, selecting products, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, and online sales.

Oudomxay province, some 400km north of the capital Vientiane, will be central to production, processing, selection, packaging and storage of the fruit, and the project will be expanded to other provinces. - Xinhua
