Myanmar seizes over 60 tonnes of illegal timber


YANGON: Myanmar authorities have seized over 60 tonnes of illegal timbers across the country in a week, the state-run daily The Mirror reported on Wednesday (Dec 4).

From Nov 25 to Dec 1, they confiscated over 22.30 tonnes of teak, over 5.41 tonnes of hardwood and over 33.38 tonnes of other types of timbers in the country's regions, states and Naypyidaw Union Territory, the report said.

During this period, 17 offenders were charged in connection with the cases, along with the seizure of 10 vehicles and machines, it added.

The Forest Department has been cracking down on illegal logging and trading of forest products and is committed to implementing tree plantation projects in substitution. - Xinhua
