JAKARTA: The Malaysian Consulate General in Medan and the Malaysian Club Medan (MCM) on Thursday (Aug 29), organised a lively Teh Tarik Festival in Medan, that was attended by some 170 guests.

Among those present were Malaysian expatriates, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials from North Sumatra Province and Medan City, as well as local figures from the business, banking, health, and tourism sectors.

Various traditional Malaysian dishes such as roti canai, murtabak, Penang curry mee, and nasi lemak with fried chicken, along with an assortment of local cakes and teh tarik, were served at the event, according to a statement from the Malaysian Consulate General in Medan.

The Malaysian Consulate General in Medan stated that the festival also served to promote Malaysia's culinary heritage by showcasing iconic breakfast dishes - Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, and Teh Tarik - which have been nominated by Malaysia for Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

In his speech, Consul General of Malaysia in Medan, Shahril Nizam Abdul Malek, expressed hope that Malaysian expatriates would collaborate to safeguard interests and promote Malaysia in Indonesia, particularly in Sumatra Island.

In response, MCM President Goh Tiam Huat welcomed the initiative to strengthen collaboration and shared that several joint activities have been planned and will be implemented in the near future.

The highlight of the festival was a demonstration of teh tarik-making skills by Mohd Zairul Nizam Md Lazim from the Royal Malaysian Navy Liaison Office.

In addition, 10 selected guests also participated in the "Teh Tarik Challenge”, which was specifically organised to uncover hidden talents in making this iconic Malaysian drink. - Bernama
