VIENTIANE: More than 100 male and female players from clubs in Vientiane and three provinces are engaged in tough competition in hopes of winning the first Sepak Takraw Federation President’s Cup, with matches taking place in Vientiane from Aug 14-18.

The aim is to improve the players’ skills so they enjoy more success at the international level.

The federation will use the tournament to select the most talented players for the national team, while the highly competitive matches are also an opportunity to test and improve the skills of referees.

The tournament is taking place at the Olympasia Indoor Stadium at the National University of Laos’ Dongdok campus, supported by Lao Telecom and other businesses and organisations.

The event comprises men’s U-18 doubles, women’s doubles, and men’s and women’s team matches involving four players.

Teams from clubs, villages, institutions and other entities in Vientiane and the provinces of Champassak, Savannakhet and Luang Prabang are taking part.

In the U-18 men’s doubles final played on Thursday (Aug 15), Champassak province came out on top after narrowly beating Savannakhet province 2-1 (11-15, 17-16 and 17-14).

Sepak takraw will also feature in the 8th National Schools Games, to be hosted by Saravan province in December. – Vientiane Times/ANN
