KUALA LUMPUR: In celebration of 50 years of diplomatic ties between Mexico and Malaysia, the public is invited to explore the vibrant contemporary art of Mexican artist Ricardo Chavez Tovar, who has made Malaysia his home for over two decades.

The exhibition, themed "Random Selection”, offers a unique glimpse into his artistic journey. Most of the artworks in the exhibition were created in a darkroom using a photographic method that doesn’t require a camera.

Ambassador of Mexico to Malaysia, Luis J Campuzano, said that Tovar has been actively involved in Malaysian society through his artwork, including providing consultation services and donating pieces to the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Tuanku Fauziah Museum and Art Gallery in Penang.

He added that the art for the "Random Selection” exhibition was produced entirely in Penang, Malaysia, specifically on Armenian Street in the heart of George Town.

"The focus of this artistic endeavour has been the sacred feminine, coming from the world mythology and its wide implications in the art, the culture, and the collective psyche.

"Art has been one of the key platforms in the Mexico-Malaysia relationship which turns 50 this year,” he told Bernama.

Tovar, 61, has been living in Malaysia for the past 23 years and is currently the Head of Fine Arts at the School of Art, Media, and Design Technology at the Equator College in Penang.

The "Random Selection” exhibition is being held at the Gilberto Aceves Navarro – Datuk Ibrahim Hussein Gallery at the Embassy of Mexico here, until further notice. It is open from 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, with free entrance.

Members of the public interested in visiting are advised to call the Embassy of Mexico in Kuala Lumpur at 03-2164-6362 in advance.

The bilateral relations between Malaysia and Mexico were established on March 27, 1974. Since then, exchanges in various bilateral and multilateral areas have demonstrated increasing cooperation between the two countries.
