Eight people killed in India's Tamil Nadu fireworks factory explosion

CHENNAI (Bernama): Eight people, including women, were killed and three injured in an explosion at a fireworks factory in the Virudhunagar district of India's Tamil Nadu state on Saturday.

Police were investigating the cause of the blast, local media reported.

Accidents involving fireworks manufacturing units are not uncommon in Virudhunagar, located about 500 km from the state capital Chennai.

Fourteen people were killed in October last year in two explosions in the district and two died in a blast last month.

According to local media reports, the incident occurred under the Vembakottai police station limits of the district. As per what the locals had said, the impact of blast was so high that four buildings along with the firecracker factory were destroyed following the explosion.

Following the incident, a team of police and the fire department rushed to the spot and admitted the injured to a local hospital. - Bernama
