ST Singaporean of the Year Sakthibalan Balathandautham donated part of his liver to a little girl he had never met. - ST

SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/Asia News Network): While checking social media messages in July 2020, Sakthibalan Balathandautham came across a plea by a young couple looking for a liver donor for their one-year-old child.

Over the next three hours, he could not stop thinking about the toddler. Sakthibalan read up about organ donation online, learning more about the surgical procedure and expected period of recovery.
