VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): Australia has donated 905,580 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine and 100,000 doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine.

The vaccines were handed over on Wednesday (Jan 12) to Minister of Health Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaysith by the Australian Deputy Head of Mission, Dan Heldon, and the Unicef Representative a.i. to Laos, Beate Dastel.

On behalf of the government, Dr Bounfeng sincerely thanked the Government of Australia for supplying more than 1 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine for the benefit of the Lao people.

“Australia’s contribution is most welcome and will greatly support our current efforts to achieve the goal of vaccinating 87.25 per cent of the population in 2022,” he said.

The Pfizer BioNTech vaccine will be used to immunise adolescents aged 12 to 17 as part of the government’s efforts to get children back to school and roll out the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan, according to a press release from the Ministry of Health.

The Pfizer vaccine will also be used to vaccinate people aged 60 and above, healthcare workers, and those with underlying health conditions.

The AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine provided by Australia will be used to provide further protection to priority groups.

Heldon said “Australia is proud to play a role in bolstering the Lao government’s Covid-19 response and its efforts to meet the new vaccination target of 87.25 per cent by 2022.”

“The shipment of Pfizer BioNTech vaccine provided by Australia will be key in supporting the government’s strategy to protect adolescents against the virus with a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization.”

Dastel said “Unicef is pleased to support the delivery of these Covid-19 vaccines. All Covid-19 vaccines currently in use in Laos have been rigorously tested and proven to be safe and effective in preventing severe illness and death from Covid-19.”

The Pfizer BioNTech vaccine has been provided to hundreds of millions of people around the world and has been marked as safe and effective for adolescents aged 12 to 17.

Laos recorded 916 new cases of Covid on Wednesday, with seven more deaths.

The National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control said 4,913 tests were conducted across the country over the previous 24 hours and that the 916 new infections comprised 908 locally-transmitted cases and eight imported cases.
