HANOI, May 1 (dpa): The Vietnamese government has again rejected a recent Chinese fishing ban imposed on waters in the South China Sea and called on China to comply with international laws.
"Vietnam rejects and vehemently rejects China's unilateral decision," Foreign Affairs Ministry deputy spokesperson Doan Khac Viet of Ministry said at a press briefing earlier this week. It was also the same situation last year..
"Vietnam's position is that measures taken to preserve biological resources should be carried out in accordance with relevant regulations under the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) without compromising the sovereignty and jurisdiction rights of other nations,” he said, adding the action impedes on Vietnam's sovereignty, including over the Paracel Islands, and violates international law.
China on Tuesday announced a ban on fishing in the disputed South China Sea, including parts of the Gulf of Tonkin and waters surrounding the Paracel Islands, to start Saturday and run through September 16, citing conservation concerns, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea as its territory, including waters and islands claimed by Vietnam and other nations.
The Paracel Islands are claimed by Vietnam, but were occupied by China in the aftermath of a 1974 invasion that killed dozens of Vietnamese.
Vietnam recorded 14 new cases of Covid-19 infections on Saturday (May 1), including three locally transmitted and 11 imported, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 2,942, according to the country's Ministry of Health.
The three community cases were reported in the northern Ha Nam province, and are all contacts of previously confirmed patients.
The imported cases are all Vietnamese citizens who recently entered the country from abroad and were quarantined upon arrival, said the ministry.
As many as 2,549 patients have been given the all-clear as of Saturday, up 33 from Friday, the ministry said, adding that over 38,600 people are being quarantined and monitored. - dpa
