PHNOM PENH, April 27 (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): Cambodia on Tuesday confirmed 508 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing the national case total to 11,063, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

Three more deaths have been recorded, bringing the death toll to 82, the statement said, adding that 127 patients have recovered, raising the overall number of recoveries to 3,704.

Of the new infections, 248 were found in capital Phnom Penh.

The South-East Asian nation has been enduring the third wave of Covid-19 community transmission since Feb 20.

In a bid to flatten the infection curve, the kingdom has ordered a lockdown in Phnom Penh, Ta Khmau city and Preah Sihanouk city.

The ministry also reported 127 recoveries, all but one of which were linked to the February 20 outbreak.

For the record - as of April 27, Cambodia had recorded a total of 11,063 Covid-19 cases, with 7,270 receiving ongoing treatment and 82 fatalities.

Meanwhile, Casinos in Banteay Meanchey Province were ordered to temporarily close on April 27 by provincial governor Oum Reatry after detecting 171 cases of Covid-19.

However, the decision did not specify when the casinos would reopen.

"The casino business in Banteay Meanchey province is temporarily closed until further notice," the decision stated.

Provincial administration director and spokesman Chhoeun Kraiyong said the suspension of the casino business in the province was issued after an outbreak of Covid-19 cases from casino players was detected.

"Seeing the outbreak, the provincial administration decided to suspend all casinos in Poipet town. We wouldn’t have closed them if it wasn’t related," said Kraiyong.

Roeun Sothy, deputy director of the provincial health department, said on April 23 that the health department found an Indonesian man suffering from pneumonia. Since then, the department has identified 171 Covid-19 cases as of April 27. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN
