Irresponsible drivers punished in Brunei for cigarette butt tossing

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Dec 12 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Brunei authority issued compound fines of 100 Brunei dollars (US$74.8) each to two drivers who were seen throwing cigarette butts from their cars.

The offenders have to settle their fines within seven days or face a further fine of 1,000 Brunei dollars, or a month's imprisonment, for the first convicted offense.

For subsequent offences, the penalty is a fine of BND3,000 and a prison term of up to three months.

According to Brunei laws, tobacco-producing and selling are strictly forbidden in the sultanate and heavy duties are imposed on imported cigarettes.

The two individuals are among 25 individuals and five companies issued with fines totalling BND4,400 by the Law Enforcement Unit of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department, during a recent Operasi Bersih in Kumbang Pasang Gadong, Kampong Kiulap, Bandar Seri Begawan and Kampong Serusop.

Three companies were each fined BND500, for violations under Section 12(1)(c) and Section 12(1)(d) of the Minor Offences Act.

The remaining two companies were levied with BND200 in compound fine for violations under Section 12(1)(a) and Section 12(1)(b) of the Minor Offences Act.

Meanwhile, locals Muhammad Aman bin Haji Abdul Rahim, Nurizzati @Nurizzah binti Haji Rosli, Amirah Diyana binti Noorajiman Yusra, Mohammad Fairuz bin Haji Sulong, Mohammad Ismarudy Muzady bin Haji Ismail, Muhammad Amirul Hadi Yusra bin Noorajiman Yusra, Siti Tuty Amira Farina binti Mohd Azalan, Muhammad Nur Azmi bin Abdul Saini, Muhammad Abdul Azri bin Zaini, Amzi Asreel bin Empat @Adlee, Mohammad Salman bin Sofian, Mohammad Zainul Aiman bin Haji Zakaria, Pengiran Muhammad Alli Thaqif bin Pengiran Haji Shahbudin and permanent resident Jong Kian Fong each received a BND100 compound fine for violating Section 12(1)(a) of Minor Offences Act.

Jasni bin Haji Abdul Mokmin and Lim Hui Jiew from Malaysia; Junaidi and Ribut Hariyono from Indonesia; Samchan Insamit from Thailand; Marco Jay Zabaldica Pesino and Jovert Cuaresma Tuazon from the Philippines; Saril Chakkadath from India; and Al Amin, Sajib Pal and Muhammad Juwel from Bangladesh were also fined BND100 each, for violating Section 12(1)(a) of Minor Offences Act. - Borneo Bulletin/Asian News Network
